CORNET
Voluntary |
 |
Originally an organ solo, the work is supplied with a
trumpet score. It is most effective when the organist plays the alto and bass
with quiet stops, comping, as the trumpet with mute takes the solo line. The
trumpet part, originally for organ, will require the performer to make
decisions about breath marks which the performer can manage for the original
long organ solo phrases. Very effective.

With a traditional classical opening, the mood of the
piece shifts to a jazz statement with slides and rhythmic features. The work
was commissioned by Jack Partridge, Director of Music at the First Presbyterian
Church in Regina, Saskatchewan, and the Royal Brass Quartet. It was premiered
on Easter Sunday at the church.
